Collection
The Aargauer Kunsthaus is home to one of the most beautiful and comprehensive public collections of Swiss art from the 18th century up to the present. Focal points of the collection are bodies of work by Caspar Wolf, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Arnold Böcklin and 19th century landscape painting. Early Modernism is represented by major works of Ferdinand Hodler and Cuno Amiet. From these, the collection traces an arc through Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and the Swiss expressionists to the exponents of Zurich concrete art, such as Max Bill, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Hans Arp. Post-war abstract art and the new artistic departure of the 1960s are likewise covered. Important acquisitions of works by contemporary artists such as Ugo Rondinone, Thomas Hirschhorn and Mai-Thu Perret continue this collection tradition. Themed presenations of works from the collection and regularly reconfigured exhibitions of the museum's holdings allow for stimulating dialogues and keep opening up new perspectives.
Artwork of the Month
Every month a specific work from the Collection is focussed on. In this context, a guided tour for the general public takes place every week at lunch-time, with the aim of facilitating an intense engagement with a specific artistic position.
